Executive Director

Shain Filcher brings a wide breadth of personal and professional experience fighting for LGBTQ+ people of all ages, particularly LGBTQ+ youth in crisis. Most recently, Shain served as a Staff Attorney within the LGBTQ+ Legal Project at Legal Services of the Hudson Valley. In this role, they worked on a wide variety of legal issues specific to members of the LGBTQ+ communities, including discrimination based on sexual orientation, gender identity, and/or gender expression, court-ordered name changes, accessing affirming healthcare, and recognition of legal parentage.

 

Active in the legal community both locally and nationwide, they spend a great deal of time working within bar associations dedicated to promoting justice in and through the legal profession for all LGBTQ+ people, particularly LeGaL. Shain first began volunteering at LeGaL at the Manhattan weekly legal clinic in 2015. They have served on the LeGaL Board of Directors since 2018. During their time with LeGaL thus far, they have introduced new programming events, funding streams, and championed the pre-law LSAT scholarship fund. Additionally, they have previously served on the National Conference of Bar Presidents Membership Communications Committee and Membership, the Diversity Committee of the National LGBTQ+ Bar Association, and the Network of Bar Leaders Executive Council. 

 

They were named to the National LGBTQ+ Bar Association’s “Best LGBTQ+ Lawyers Under 40 Class of 2021” and the 2022 New York City Law Power 100 list.

 

Shain received their law degree from University of Oregon School of Law and BA from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.
