An amicus curiae ("friend of the court") brief provides valuable perspectives, legal analysis, and lived experiences from parties not directly named in litigation. The LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York (LGBT Bar NY) periodically authors or joins amicus briefs to educate appellate judges and safeguard LGBTQ+ constitutional and civil rights.
Our Role in Strategic Impact Litigation
Courts frequently address complex legal questions that affect the broader LGBTQ+ community. Through our Legal Services and Advocacy Board Committee, we evaluate pending cases in state and federal appellate courts to identify opportunities where our voice, expertise, and historical perspective can assist the bench in reaching just and informed determinations.
The Committee reviews prospective cases to ensure our participation aligns with our mission to advance full equality and equal protection under the law.
