Student Internship Program
The LGBT Bar Association of Greater New York (LGBT Bar NY) offers internship opportunities for students interested in learning more about the legal profession, non-profit administration, and LGBTQ+ civil rights advocacy. Our program provides meaningful, hands-on exposure to community legal services, bar association operations, and issues affecting LGBTQ+ New Yorkers.
Law Student Clinic Intern (Spring Term)
We are currently accepting applications from current law students for our Spring Clinic Internship beginning in January.
This role works directly alongside our legal services director, staff, and volunteer attorneys to support frontline community access:
- Weekly Commitment: Approximately 4 hours total per week.
- Clinic Attendance: Mandatory participation at our weekly drop-in legal clinic on Tuesday evenings (in-person at The Center in Manhattan or hybrid as scheduled).
- Key Responsibilities:
- Conducting initial client intake screening and conflict checks.
- Assisting volunteer attorneys with clinic coordination, room staging, and file management.
- Providing administrative support, referral tracking, and database entry for clinic records.
- Compensation & Academic Credit: This is an unpaid internship. We are pleased to coordinate with your law school's public interest office or clinical department to satisfy requirements for academic credit, pro bono graduation requirements, or public interest fellowship grants.
General Internship Opportunities
Beyond our Tuesday clinic openings, LGBT Bar NY periodically hosts undergraduate, graduate, and law students for term-time and summer internships focused on organizational management, public policy, and bar operations.
- Assisting with legal clinic logistics and community referral services.
- Supporting Association communications, newsletter archival, and membership outreach.
- Coordinating Continuing Legal Education (CLE) webcasts, panels, and networking events.
- Observing Association committee initiatives, court reform projects, and advocacy panels.
